Choosing a light
What you are lighting decides the light. In a freshwater fish tank the decision is mostly about spread and colour rendition, with enough output for the plants. A reef tank is a different problem: corals photosynthesise, so the lamp has to deliver the right spectrum and intensity at depth, and fine control matters because corals adjust to a change in light slowly. The Hydor Aqamai Reef Wi-Fi LED Lamp is made for marine aquariums and is set over Wi-Fi, so ramping, spectrum and photoperiod are handled in software rather than on a plug-in timer; the Aqamai Brackets hold it at a fixed height above an open-top or rimless tank. The Classica Bubble Curtain Underwater LED Light is a different thing again — a submerged light-and-bubble feature rather than a growth light. Whatever the fixture, run a consistent photoperiod: long lighting hours are a common reason a healthy tank turns green.
Heaters and cabinets
Heater wattage follows tank volume and how cold the room gets. A common rule of thumb is roughly one watt per litre in a heated room and more in an unheated one, so match the Hydor Theo Aquarium Heater to your tank rather than buying the biggest available. On tanks over a couple of hundred litres, two smaller heaters at opposite ends give more even warmth and less trouble if one fails, and a separate thermometer at the far end is the only way to know what the water is doing. Cabinets are a structural decision, not a decorative one: a filled aquarium weighs roughly a kilogram per litre before you add rock and substrate, so the stand has to carry the whole base. The Juwel Primo 60/70 SBX cabinet and the Juwel Trigon LED base cabinet are cut to the footprint of the matching Juwel tanks, and the Trigon is a corner unit, so measure your tank base against the cabinet top before ordering.
