A dog harness spreads the pull across the chest and shoulders instead of the throat, which is why it is the usual recommendation for puppies still learning to walk, for dogs that pull, and for flat-faced or small breeds whose windpipes do not tolerate collar pressure. Most sizing mistakes come from buying to a weight range. Measure the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and check that girth against the size chart on the listing. Two fingers should slide under any strap once it is done up. If the harness can be pulled forward over the shoulders it is too loose, and that is the escape route a startled dog will find. A growing puppy will usually need a second size within a few months, which is worth knowing before you buy the expensive one first.
