Wombaroo Kangaroo Milk Replacer 0.4 is the milk substitute for kangaroo and wallaby joeys between 40% and 60% of the way through pouch life. It is the step up from the <0.4 powder, and the stage is readable on the animal: still furless, but the skin has darkened, the eyes are nearly or just open and the ears are close to erect. The joey stays in the pouch and may occasionally poke its head out. The formula is moderate in energy, balancing carbohydrate against fat at 34% protein, 22% fat and 19 MJ/kg, and its protein is high in the sulphur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine — what a joey needs as hair growth begins. Eighteen grams of powder makes 100 millilitres of milk. PeekAPaw carries the 180g and 900g packs. Joeys at this age are still prone to disease, and Wombaroo recommends hand-rearing be left to experienced carers.

Making Up Milk
To make 100mL of milk: Mix 18g of powder (2½ scoops) with 90mL of warm water.
To make 1 litre of milk: Mix 180g of powder with 900mL of warm water.
Add about half the water to the powder first and mix to a paste. Then make up with the remaining water and mix thoroughly. Water is preboiled to ensure that it is sterilised. If the water is too hot it can cause the milk to curdle. If it is too cold then it will be difficult to disperse the powder. An electric whisk can be used for mixing larger quantities. Milk can be stored in the fridge for a day or can be frozen for up to 2 weeks. It may be useful to store frozen milk in small portions (e.g. ice cube trays), so that the required daily feed volumes can be easily thawed out. Once thawed out, discard any unused milk, and wash feeding utensils thoroughly.
